Background

The South African Congress for Early Childhood Development is hosting the OMEP 2002 World Council and Conference on behalf of OMEP South Africa. Herewith some information on the organisation.

The South African Congress for Early Childhood Development is the representative national mass-based, non-governmental early childhood develepment (ECD) organisation in South Africa. The organisation represents the interest of over 7 million young children (birth to nine years old), ECD workers and the ECD sector in general. The organisation operates from a national office based in Pretoria, Gauteng Province and i represented by 9 Provincial Executive Committee's (PEC's) in the 9 (nine) provinces of our country.

The organisation was launched at a national conference during 23-25 March 1994 in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape Province.

This historic launch was a result of a four-year long process of intensive organising, mobilising and unifying of the ECD sector.

The birth of the South African Congress for ECD was in itself part of the broad thrust for democratic transformation and reconmstruction of the South African Society. The sector now known to be the early childhood development sector. The birth of the SA Congress for ECD signaled the initiation of an institution of a new type, within a sector that mirrored the contour lines of apartheid privilege and an institution that was poised to drive aheead with its mission and mandate to "unite, mobilise, organise and democratise"
